Overall Impression: If you liked Happy Gilmore, you should enjoy this one.
I’m not a HUGE fan of Adam Sandler, but I do find him to be mostly funny. I think for a lot of stuff he’s way too over the top for my taste, and in the era of revitalizing dead movies into shitty sequels, I didn’t have a lot of high hopes for Happy Gilmore 2. The previews looked funny, but like a lot of movies I’ve seen in the past few years, I was afraid the best parts were in the previews and the rest of the movie was going to be “meh” at best.
I am happy to say that I was completely wrong. Happy Gilmore is a more mature version of himself, and Adam Sandler doesn’t do as much of the over the top weirdo acting that he has done for a lot of his movies in the past. So in that aspect of it, I was very happy.
I am also happy because the few previews I saw it looked like the story was going to be a rehash of the first film, with Happy Gilmore and Shooter McGavin going at it again. That is not the plot, it’s actually a whole new story and while Shooter is a part of it, it’s not the rehash I was afraid of.
Unfortunately, quite a few of the memorable people from the first movie have since passed. In this film its people playing their adult children, so we’re able to have some moments that were fun in the original with an homage to the actors who helped make the first film a success.
There are also a lot of celebrities in here that I would not have guessed would be in a film. MJF from AEW plays one of Happy’s sons. It was awesome to see MJF in a role where he’s not a complete egomaniac like his character in AEW. Becky Lynch from the WWE is also in here, but she had a much smaller role. Eminem plays one of the sons of an original character, Post Malone shows up, Guy Fieri shows up. There’s a lot of big names in here. So it’s pretty funny to see them all having fun.
Overall, this is a fun movie. I don’t know if it’s one I’d rewatch often, but I wouldn’t be sad to see it again. I thought it was pretty good and recommend anyone who saw and enjoyed the original to give this one a go.
