When A Minecraft Movie was announced, and the cast was announced with it, I had a feeling this movie was going to be an over the top stupid movie with a bunch of dumb humor and a loose tie in to Minecraft. I was wrong. It’s an over the top stupid movie with a bunch of dumb humor with a Minecraft-centric story.

So lets start with the good: Jack Black as Steve is Jack Black. He’s funny, he’s goofy, he’s over the top. Things Jack Black is really good at. Jason Mamoa as the Garbage Man is also a really fun character in the movie. He reminds me of the guy Peter Dinklage played in Pixels. So nothing new, but very much kept up the stereotype for his character.

The movie is really good looking. I saw some interviews and they were showing off some of the sets where they were 100% real effects and not CGI for buildings, props, landscape, etc. So in that respect, it’s great to look at.

But the plot of the movie… it really felt like were scraping some barrels to get the plot. The movie, outside of what takes place inside of the Minecraft world, makes very little sense. A kid who was obsessed with mining finds a magic jewel that opens a magic portal to the world of Minecraft… and it just goes off the rails from there. The plot INSIDE of the Minecraft world is what I would expect from a Minecraft Dungeons game, assuming it’s not already based on that since I’ve only played regular Minecraft and not Dungeons.

If the movie would have been inside of the Minecraft world the whole time or something like Ready Player One where it’s played up like some super interactive VR, without all the real world tie ins, I feel like it would have been a lot better. The round people, as the real humans are called, could be how they see each other, and they don’t see each other’s blocky real selves or something. That would have been a better story of how the world works vs what they did.

Would I pay money to see the movie? No. Did I stream it for free? Yes. Was the price right? Yes. I would not watch it again. Once is definitely enough. Some people love the film, I just think it’s not worth a second watch.
